“Hell, any of them could have done it”
Knives Out Movie Campaign
American mystery written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Ram Bergman. It follows a master detective investigating the death of the patriarch of a wealthy, dysfunctional family. After his throat is cut , the movie takes several twists and turns to find out the murderer, leaving the viewer guessing until the very end.
DESIGN PROBLEM: To design marketing materials for Knives Out to drive ticket sales. Create movie posters using Photoshop to help draw in the target audience. To create a website and mobile website to gain interest in the movie plot and characters. To create a social media presence and buzz to drive sales for the movie.

DESIGN PROCESS: After viewing the film, I saw a lot of similarities to the classic murder mystery film “Clue”. I wanted to create material that would resemble characteristics of that movie campaign. I wanted almost all pieces to showcase the members of the cast because there are a lot of high-quality actors who play in this film. I chose to stick with a few different elements for the whole project to make sure they were cohesive across all platforms and people would recognize the movie. For one of the movie posters I used an image of an old mansion and created a layer mask to turn one of the windows red and I placed a man in that window. I think this adds to the mystery of the movie and quickly draws the eye to that spot.
DESIGN SOLUTION: I used a yellow typeface on a dark red background in one poster to make sure the name of the movie stood out among the rest of the elements. On the other poster, I chose to use a silhouette of the knife display that is used in the movie. I also wanted to use a icon that is synonomous with detective movies, a magnifying glass. I used a distort effect on the word “Out” to make it appear as if it was magnified.
